Artist Statement
I make art about people having fun with their bodies, the quiet moments before and after, the transformational moments inside a relationship or scene. I like to catch the split second that a choice is made, or to render a physical sensation in paint.
About NadiaMy work always features lines, sharp and expressive – but often messy and disorganized, at the same time. Much like me.
I draw quickly and constantly – I want to catch the ephemeral glimpses of my subjects, which are fleeting and must necessarily be created by a fast hand. I want to know what these people are thinking and experiencing, how they’re relating to each other, how they’re relating to their situation. I’ve never been good at intuitively understanding much of anything – unless I can art about it. I consider my artwork documentarian. Part photojournalism, showing the essence of what I see in front of me – and part field journal, where I record what I can perceive, and imagine what I can’t perceive directly.
Me, I’m a kinky, queer artist, nonbinary and neurodivergent.
I want people to find art that recognizes the world my subjects live in, partly so I can understand different angles on our world, and partly so my subjects can see themselves how I see them – fascinating, complex, and deeply feeling.
