Description
A firefly climbs a blade of grass at night. The ground is a gel print — overlapping blocks of blue, teal, and gray standing in for layered darkness rather than a single flat backdrop — with pale mint flecks scattered across it, artifacts of the printing plate that read as points of light in the air. The insect is drawn over the print in acrylic paint pen. Its abdomen ends in a green teardrop, the brightest point in an otherwise dark field.
The abdomen and the light around it are painted in UV-reactive, glow-in-the-dark pigment. Under normal light the piece reads as a night scene; in darkness, the firefly’s lantern glows. The subject and the material are the same thing: a picture of a creature that makes its own light, made with pigment that makes its own light.
